HOW TO CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSET LIKE A PRO

First off, I hope all of my friends here are doing well! This crazy weird time is making big adjustments on all of us, some harder than others. I want to keep sharing all my light, positive vibes and continue sharing inspiration while we are getting through this! So today, I’m going to tell you all of my favorite tips and expert tricks about how to clean out your closet.

We are getting closer to fall and finally getting out more often again, which means putting together stylish outfits after months of loungewear! One of the best things about editing your closet is you’re able to rediscover hidden gems to wear different ways. It’s easy to forget what we own until we take the time to edit our closet. More often than not we have amazing pieces in our closets we can style and make them feel like new again. Plus, playing dress up in our own closets is the fun and excitement some of us really need! I edited my closet earlier this year with my home remodel (including a full closet tour) and I’m doing it every season! I felt so refreshed and reinspired, I want all of you to feel the same! To help you revamp your wardrobe, I’m sharing a few of my favorite closet editing tips to try for yourself.

SET ASIDE SOME TIME

We all live such busy lives, it is kind of a blessing to have time set aside for taking care of home organization.  If you are like me and have a crazy busy schedule most of the time, it is the best idea to spread it out. Block out a couple hours a night to clean our your closet at least one section at a time.

CLOSET EDITING TIPS

PURGE UNNECESSARY PIECES

Let’s face it, we all end up with pieces in our wardrobe that we don’t love or may not fit anymore. Keeping pieces you don’t love or no longer fit tends to just take up space in your closet. When you clean your closest, it’s important to purge out anything that you haven’t worn in the last year, don’t love, or doesn’t fit. As Marie Kondo says, does it spark joy?! Personally, anytime I’m not wearing pieces anymore I love to consign or sell them to get back some of what I invested in the purchases. Not only is selling or consigning a great way to earn back some of your investment, but it’s a great way to allow others to give new life to clothes you’re no longer wearing. Northshore Exchange is a great place to consign in the Chicago area and it also helps charity! Consignors will get paid for their donations, but 100% of the remaining proceeds will be donated to charity. I also love to host Instagram live closet sales! Everything left over, I donate to Salt and Light Coalition which is an amazing non profit that helps women survivors of sex trafficking.

REINVENT WHAT YOU OWN

One of my favorite things about going through my closet, and client’s closets, is reinventing what you own. Before you clean out your closet, it can be easy to fall into a routine of wearing everything the same way all the time. Going through your closet to get a clear picture of what you own is also a great opportunity to see things in a whole new light. When I go through my (and client’s) closets I make sure to spend some time discovering new ways to wear pieces I already own. I get a lot of inspiration from Pinterest, check out my boards for some style ideas! Taking a few minutes to experiment with different ways to wear things using what you own is a great way to get out of your style rut and discover a whole new world without buying anything new.

CLOSET ORGANIZATION TIPS

ORGANIZATION IS KEY

Organizing your clothes strategically is super important while editing your closet. After you’ve gone through the previously mentioned steps, I suggest ending your closet editing with an organization overhaul. First and most importantly, swap your hangers for these velvet hangers from Amazon! Your clothes won’t slip off and they are thin so you can fit the most clothes possible. Then, I highly suggest to organize all your clothes by category and then by color. This organization system is incredibly efficient! Not to mention, when your clothes are organized by color and category it’s much easier to style different looks. As for jewelry, I suggest laying everything in velvet trays so it’s easy to see what you have. Or, get creative and use a velvet scarf (if you have one!). Now, everything has a home! Personally, this organizing method also helps me save time when getting ready because everything has it’s place and it’s super easy to find what I’m looking for.

START A LOOKBOOK

The last step for myself (and my clients) is starting a lookbook! To make your dressing experience totally effortless and easy, play dress up in some new, creative looks and take mirror selfies. Add these selfies to an album in your phone called “Look Book” for an on-hand inventory of your own outfit inspiration! When I am getting dressed up in a rush or if I’m lacking inspiration, I always run to my album to find looks I’ve already created and already love. It is super helpful!
